Beds vs crates

Personally, for puppies I would suggest a well-fitted crate as it is a good way to limit their ability to make bad choices and reduce the chances of any mishaps in the night.  Furthermore when they are on their own, it reduces any pacing up and down or looking out of windows which can cause separation-related behaviour or excessive barking.  As they become older it depends on your dog, if you are confident they won’t be destructive, then a bed may be a great option.  Or why not have both, some dog trainers and owners like to have a bed in every room that the dog uses to give their dogs a calm and happy environment and reduce action prompting.

With crates, it is best to leave a towel or cover over it to give a quieter more comforting environment; there should be just enough space for your dog to turn round, with a well-fitting mat to reduce access to chewing.

With either a bed or crate it is important to familiarise your dog and train them with treats to show them it is a good to be place and help them feel they aren’t missing out.
