Fun toys and food dispensers

All these toys I have personally purchased, and they survived the destructive nature of my border collie when he was a puppy!  They are the perfect items to enrich your dog’s life by use of brain and scent work.  This in turn helps create calmness, discourages separation-related behaviours, and in the case of Tug-e-nuff toys, encourages recall.

Ditch the bowl

Ditch the bowl

Ditching the food bowl is the most common training suggestion I make and really adds to a dog’s life.  Here are just a few reasons:

  • Dogs enjoy earning their food.  If we were given 90% of our salary for free would we work for the last 10%?  It is the same for dogs – if they knew they have to work for their treats, they are much more likely to put in the effort to obtain it it.
  • Creates a calmer dog and less barking.  Every time your dog is playing with a Kong, licking a mat, or sniffing through a snuffle mat it creates a far calmer attitude with to a production of serotonin.
  • Reduces separation related behaviours.  These often start due to FOMO or fear of missing out.  Well, if you step out but they are with their favourite Kong, it is you that is missing out! Also helps divert their attention.
  • Better digestion.  When it comes to eating, often dogs still act like they are in the wild and need to eat as soon as possible.  Having to work out and use their intelligence how to reach to their food means they don’t eat so fast, which reduces indigestion.

Please note: It is important to supervise your dog with any new product before leaving them on their own, to ensure they are able to get to the food or treat and they can enjoy them safely.
Do start off with easy puzzles i.e. by introducing kibble first.
Also for Kong toys, some mixes of wet and dry food can stick together in a way that means a dog can’t reach them.
Going out for a long time?  Why not freeze the food in a slow feeder or Kong.
